So you want to become a real estate photographer?

Here is what you need to know:

There are three main things from the list below that you should ask yourself if you have it or not :

  • Skills
  • Passion
  • Patience

Skills

You must know the ins and outs of your camera, such as settings, buttons, lenses etc.

Have great knowledge of photography and be familiar with Iso, Shutter speed and Aperture. While you will be in the field shooting different properties with different layouts you will need to know how to change these settings properly to make the magic happen.

A very important factor in real estate photography as it is in photography in general is the light. You must have a good eye to see where the light comes from and to notice the areas that are darker.

Knowledge about artificial lighting is crucial for real estate photographers, as you can’t depend on natural light only. You will need to use camera flashes or strobes.

Selecting the right camera, it is also important if you want want to be a professional real estate photographer. When it comes to low light and places that are quite dark, a camera flash only won’t help. You are going to need a camera that takes high quality photos in low light environments.

Passion

Real estate photography is a job at the end of the day, and like any other jobs, if you are lacking passion it will reflect on your work. Only your passion will push you through when tough times come.

Try to learn something every time you go for a photoshoot.

Patience

Real estate photography is a service industry and becoming a real estate photographer means you are going to serve those in need of your photography services.

You are going to deal with lots of different people. In this business you are going to deal with landlords, tenant, cleaners, concierge and the list goes on and on. And if you want to stay in the business you are always going to put a smile on your face even when you get to the location and the house is a mess. You will have to smile and keep on photo shooting even when the dog is running around while you are trying to photo shoot the interiors of the property and the amount of time is limited.

Remember the competition is pretty high for real estate photographers, they are as good as you or even better, but the realtor or the owner of the property has chosen you. It is not only about the photographs, you are the whole package.
